Garden Description

Gardens, vineyards and olive groves in the territory of Mytilene are known from a list on a Roman marble inscription that has survived in several fragments (IG XII.2 76-80). The inscription records an apparent census of property taken at an unknown date . Although vineyards and olive groves are the dominant type of rural property, several gardens are listed in Fragment 78b, some of them recorded as being near a house, or located in a particular spot, or as belonging to a named individual.
