Garden Description
An inscription found near Timgad (Algeria) in 1955 records the epitaph of Cicero Thabudeiensis, “a man of honorable reputation, evidently from Thabudeos (modern Thouda, near Biskra), set up some time in the second or third century CE by C. Iul(ius) Silv[anus], who dedicated a tomb garden (cepotap[hium]) to Cicero and to his own descendants, on account of the memory of (his) future kindness to him (ob memoriam futurae in se b[enevolentiae]). Perhaps Cicero had granted Silv[anus] manumission and a legacy upon the completion of certain operae, for which Silv[anus] expresses his gratitude in advance through funerary commemoration.
