Smyrna

Place Description

On the Aegean coast of Anatolia, Smyrna was rebuilt after an earthquake in the 2nd century CE atop the area of the city first established after the conquest of Alexander the Great on the slopes of Mt. Pagos (Kadifekale). An inscription suggests the presence of a palm grove that was an elaborately decorated park, as noted at Aphrodisias. (Robert 526, n. 5 on IBR IV, 1431.)
