Despite the rather sparse archaeological evidence for gardens in Tarragona, one of the most important cities of Roman Spain, there is a brief passage at the beginning of Vergilius orator an poetaby Publius Annius Florus, friend of Hadrian, in which he described a temple garden thought to be in Tarragona, though the city is not mentioned explicitly: "While I was passing through the temple enclosure my head full of the fatigues of the day, pleasantly resting in the shade of many trees by cool running water breathing fresh air, I suddenly came upon a group of people..."
